Brandon Funston – Yahoo Fantasy Expert
Brandon Funston over at Yahoo Fantasy Sports has released his first “Big Board” and I think we ought to take a look at it. The Big Board can be found here. Taking a look at it I have a few comments, including a retraction of my own on Matt Holliday. First things first, the top ten look great – with one difference for me: Ian Kinsler. This depends on your preference on an issue: Position Scarcity. 2B, along with C & some SS, are the three you have to worry about. You can really screw yourself if you don’t get one of the upper echelon guys, but for my money, I am not putting my trust in Ian Kinsler. I would rather give the pick to a better stat guy (actually, I would give #10 to Chase Utley over Ian Kinsler (although Utley is #22 on his board). Here are some other notes out of the Top 50:
#15 – Alfonso Soriano. (Notes, I am starting to do my own projections, I can’t believe I am doing it) No one is giving him the credit he deserves, but you can expect a .280+ AVG, 30 HR, 85 RBI, 90+ Runs, & 20 SB. That right there is meeting all 5 standards we have laid out. If you get a late first round pick be sure to pick up Sori on the way back.
#26 – Brandon Phillips. Here is the 2B that I would prefer to have. 20/20 power with all the trimming from the 2B.
#29 – Carlos Lee. He has a ranking in MDC (Mock Draft Central) of 25, Rotoworld - 32, Yahoo! - 44. I like where Funston has him ranked and it should be around here where you grab a guy who puts up the fantasy numbers that Lee will fulfill.
#31 – Justin Morneau. MDC - 32, Rotoworld – 23, Yahoo! – 30. I think every one of these has him overrated for the position. You can get a Chris Davis about 40 picks later and I believe he may be close to the same numbers. Certainly not worth the value.
#40 – Kevin Youkilis. Really in the same boat as Morneau only Youkilis is coming off his career year. I don’t expect 30 HR again from him and without that he does not have enough value for a mid-4th round pick.
#49 – Alexis Rios. MDC – 47, Rotoworld – 31, Yahoo – 39. Funston really degrades his stats, IMO. He is better than Morneau or Youkilis and he is going later? That just seems silly to me.
The Big Surprise from The Big Board: Matt Holliday. Funston has him at #36 (the three rankings: 18, 10, 19). I am coming around to the idea that he is way overrated and am finally starting to believe it. Here is what worries me (and it has nothing to do with his Home/Road splits): Oakland. Here is what is working against Matt: (1) Oakland is not exactly a hitter’s dream. (2) They do not steal as much. (3) He is no longer hitting in the NL West. He is in the American League, the better league and no longer in the worst division in all of baseball. All these things makes him about a #20 pick to me (drastically less than the 1st rounder I originally had him penned at). I can’t help but feel like Funston has taken too much away from him, but at the same time we ought to look at Holliday accordingly.
One very quick note, I refuse to trust Vlad Guerrero this year. I just won’t do it, I swear his knees are going to fall off. Funston has him at #32.
