Where the Closers fell – 3 Drafts
I have a list of closers and I think it would be a good idea to start noting now where they are falling…and I say it again, why draft a closer in the 5th round when you can get a Matt Capps in the 11th or later? Again…why draft a closer in the 5th round when you can get a Heath Bell, Trevor Hoffman, or Matt Lindstrom in the 17th or later? Here’s the list!
Jonathan Papelbon – 6, 5, 5
Francisco Rodriguez – 6, 6, 6 (ooh, scary!)
Brad Lidge – 7, 5, 6
Joe Nathan – 8, 8, 5
Mariano Rivera – 9, 8, 7
Joakim Soria – 10, 9, 8
Bobby Jenks – 11, 9, 9
Brian Fuentes – 11, 14, 19 (and i was the one who picked him in the 14th/19th, seriously)
Jose Valverde – 12, 10, 11
Carlos Marmol – 12, 13, 9
BJ Ryan - 13, 12, 12
Jonathan Broxton – 14, 11, 9
Francisco Cordero – 14, 13, 12
Kerry Wood – 15, 11, 12
Huston Street – 16, 14, 16
Matt Capps – 17, 13, 11
Brian Wilson – 17, 14, 15
Mike Gonzalez – 18, 14, 15
Joel Hanrahan – 19, 20, Undrafted
Heath Bell – 20, 17, 17
Joey Devine – 20, Undrafted, 20
Trevor Hoffman – 20, 19, 17
Brad Ziegler – 21, Undrafted, 17
Matt Lindstrom – Undrafted, Undrafted, Undrafted. He is a fine choice, as he has the FL closer job.
George Sherrill – Undrafted, Undrafted, 20 (my pick - may be an undrafted closer, and he really does have almost no value)
Frank Francisco/CJ Wilson – Undrafted, Undrafted, Undrafted. The TX closer job is not really wide open, it is Francisco’s to lose, and he tended to do well late (another example of a closer you could have grabbed mid-season).
