Test Dummy! Pitchers Edition

I did a test to see what sort of pitching staff you can get with pitchers only in the 10th round on.  That leaves the first 9 spots for just hitters (it also means you have no sleeper hitters late, which of course you do!).  Here’s how I filled it out (with very rough projections for each pitcher – I did not put down the ERA/WHIP totals, but rather a ER & Walks + Hits stats):

Matt Cain: Rd 10, 205 IP, 13 W, 190 K, 84 ER, 258 W+H
Yovani Gallardo: Rd 11, 155 IP, 9 W, 145 K, 60 ER, 186 W+H
Aaron Harang: Rd 13, 190 IP, 11 W, 165 K, 87 ER, 237 W+H
Ted Lilly: Rd 14, 200 IP, 15 W, 175 K, 88 ER, 260 W+H
Heath Bell: Rd 15, 75 IP, 5 W, 75 K, 29 ER, 90 W+H, 35 SV
Kevin Slowey: Rd 16, 175 K, 12 W, 130 K, 76 ER, 210 W+H
Jered Weaver: Rd 17, 170 IP, 11 W, 150 K, 73 ER, 195 W+H
Trever Hoffman: Rd 18, 55 IP, 3 W, 45 K, 20 ER, 60 W+H, 35 SV
Matt Lindstrom: Rd 23, 60 IP, 3 W, 50 K, 25 ER, 84 W+H, 27 SV

Totals: 82 W, 1125 K, 3.80 ERA, 1.22957 WHIP, 97 SV
Goals: 87 W, 1225 K, 3.58 ERA, 124 WHIP, 125 SV

That’s not too bad for not having a single category really filled out.  I am always short on Saves after the draft because they are not important (How many times am I going to beat that in your head?  Never ever pay for saves :) ).  We are close enough on W’s to be satisfied because at some point we’ll grab someone off the FA Wire.  The WHIP is excellent, possibly second place material.  The ERA is bad…probably 6th place.  Same with the K’s, about 4-5th place.  To think about it, you know that if you use your first 9 picks on hitters, than you will probably be better than 3rd place on those stats (as long as  you don’t dummy your way through the first 9!).  So there you go…you can get solid stats even late in the draft.  Do you think I was too generous with Harang?  Do you not like it?  Let me know!
